3 tips to help you have what it takes and even more!

Anyone can ask a question on google and get an answer.


Just have a go and put in a question like ‘what are 3 tips for business planning?’ You will get a myriad of responses that are all correct and different. This can be overwhelming to many people who just want a simple way forward to create a good solid business plan.


Becoming good at planning in business is a learning process just like anything else we do in life. We start off being unconsciously incompetent because we do not know what we do not know about this thing called business planning. Then when we learn that planning is good for business, we become consciously incompetent, because now we know that we do not know how to plan.

Next comes the fun part, we decide to start learning how to plan in our business and we eventually become consciously competent because now we know how to structure the plan, and we build good habits to keep showing up consistently with the planning process and improving how it is done. The final stage of learning is when the planning mindset has evolved and the learning process of creating good habits, and showing up consistently to follow a good structure for planning plays out and we eventually become unconsciously competent. This is when planning has become second nature and a normal way of being to achieve results.


This learning process we go through in everything we do is a powerful framework to be aware of as it reassures us, we can learn to do anything when we want to, and this can bring certainty in an uncertain world. It is all about making good choices about how we show up because we never have everything licked in life. Making good choices is an endless process just like learning is!


Here are 3 tips to help for learning how to plan:


Tip#1

Decide to develop a planning mindset. In a previous blog, we mentioned that Plans are nothing, planning is everything”. Creating a plan is the easy part, however, understanding the yearly planning process will enable you to bring your plan to life.


Tip #2

Use a best practice structure to develop your plan that you can repeat and improve on each year. This will provide you with a framework that will allow you to achieve continuous improvement in how you plan to achieve the results you desire. When I started doing this over 5 years ago, I was clunky and unsure of how it would work, however as I consistently used the process and structure each year, the learning process has worked.


Tip# 3

Be consistent in how you show up with your planning. Creating good habits around planning and how you consistently apply your learnings is imperative. Achieving something on one day does not mean you can take it easy the next day. Making good choices and creating good habits is an endless process of showing up to be the type of person you want to be in business and in life. Chunking down your plan will support you to achieve this because it gives you the process to follow consistently.


Embracing these 3 tips will support you as a leader in business and in life because as Benjamin Franklin originally said, “Failing to plan, is preparing to fail”. Now you wouldn’t want to do that, would you?
