Have you ever wondered how to communicate with a particular person?

If you have, it’s likely because they think differently from you and as a result, you don’t understand them like you do people who are like you.

As communication expert John Maxwell says….

“Understanding people certainly impacts your ability to communicate with others”

No one needs to understand or appreciate other people but we certainly achieve more in life when we do.

Understanding other people helps us build relationships, work with people more effectively, and achieve what we want in life, whether at home or work.

There are many layers to understanding different people.

DISC, an acronym for four behaviour styles (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Compliance), outlines four behaviour styles that most people are a combination of (less than 1% of the population is just one style.)

These behaviour styles define different types of behaviours and give a code and insight into how different people think and how to then communicate with people who are dominant in particular styles.

Understanding these behaviour styles has helped millions of people understand themselves and others better and enhance their communication and collaboration to build relationships and enhance results.

Here’s a quick overview of the 4 DISC styles:

The D style is the most assertive, while the I style is the most social. The S style is the most outwardly calm, and the C Style is the most cautious.

Communicating with the different styles

When it comes to communication, there are some ‘do’s and don’ts’ for each style.

The general rule to communicating effectively and building rapport quickly is to observe how people communicate and adjust your communication to match theirs.

Each style communicates in line with their behaviour. For example, people with high D are very direct and communicate directly.

Here are some tips when communicating with each behaviour style.

Your ability to understand people will directly impact your ability to communicate effectively and create success.
